Clementina Rind and other Women Printers

Twenty-six women are known to have operated printing offices during the Colonial period (See: Hudak, Leona, Early American Women Printers and Publishers, 1639-1820, Scarecrow Press, Metuchen, NJ: 1978.). Williamsburg had only one, Clementina Rind, and she operated in the city for only two years. During this brief span, however, she secured the position of public printer and issued weekly issues of the Virginia Gazette, which carry a decidedly feminine tone.
